Find Courage

This piece, which I have named Find Courage, is the first thing I have ever painted. Hopefully, my new hobby won’t detract too much from my card marking (which currently is at a minimum).

The name derives from the sense of fear and uncertainty that I have felt over the last few weeks. It actually digs a bit deeper than that. The inspiration was drawn from surfacing items from deep within my heart and memories. I wanted it to be perfect. I slathered and brushed layer after layer searching for the right colors and mood to fit the longing I felt. I needed courage. From the beginning, I knew it wasn’t for me to keep. The passion to start and the spirit to finish was all for her.

We need courage for words; courage for action; courage to continue.

I uploaded it to the wrong tumblr account. This is part of the Gentlemon series. I might create the rest of them when I have time. It’s been awhile since I have done anything, so let’s hope I can get back into it!!! I know the whole Hearts and Crafts was a failure. Tomorrow night, I plan kicking off a valentines day themed card selection called, ” Hearts & Crafts.” I was planning to make one a day starting Feb. 1st til Valentines day. However, I’ve been quite busy juggling two jobs, so I had to postpone it. It’s been awhile since I made cards, so this will be fun. Let me know if anyone wants one or has a recommendation! I like the freedom that this medium gives me. Its quite liberating knowing that I don’t have to be exact. When you draw or sculpt something, there must be immense pressure for it to be correct, to be perfect. Perfect. I find that to be one of the most ridiculous words. The very word itself implies that there is only one goal, one correct way of doing something. I would hate to chase perfection. I doubt I would ever be happy if I spent all my energy making sure things were perfect. That’s why I like making things out of construction paper. I feel it most mirrors life. I am not a perfect person, so why should I expect or demand perfection from anything else. When creating something, the eyes are never the right shape. The color and hue aren’t exactly correct. Each cut and paste and approximation reminds me of my attempt at life. I try, but there are mistakes. I can be nice, yet cruel at unsuspecting times. I can be a strong composed person, but still send those intoxicated messages and texts when feeling low. I am imperfect and I readily accept that. The most beautiful things in life are imperfect. Its the night that did not go according to plan but was awesome nonetheless. Its the girl you meet that was not what you ideally wanted, but was everything you needed. It was her imperfections that got you—the way she said cold with a lisp, the way she always cried during Disney films, the freckles on her back.

I would hate to chase perfection. I am not perfect and nothing else is—and I love it. The things I attempt at creating are what they are.

I first started making cards for my most recent girlfriend. I have always loved arts and crafts, so I thoroughly enjoyed making them for her. She once told that I was was surprisingly good at it. This motivated me to want to make more. Since I enjoyed doing it and loved seeing the exuberant faces of my recipients, I decided to blog all the ones I create for people. These are different than the normal cards people buy at the store because I put a lot of love in them! Maybe, one day, I will be able to turn this into a lucrative business. Until then, enjoy!

The last one I made for her was a Squirtle. What can I say, she loved turtles.
